Nearly every region in Japan has a signature confection, usually sold at train stations, airports and highway rest stops rather than ordinary shops. The two requirements are a long shelf life and individual wrapping, because the sweets get handed out to coworkers and neighbors rather than eaten alone. Choosing one is often less about flavor than about representing the place you visited, and coming home empty-handed can feel like skipping a duty.

Meibutsu-gashi are sweets tied to one place: Tokyo Banana in Tokyo, momiji manju in Hiroshima, shiroi koibito in Hokkaido. They are sold at stations, airports and highway rest stops in boxes of ten or twenty identical, individually wrapped pieces, because the point is not to eat them alone but to hand them out. Bringing something back for coworkers after a trip is close to an unwritten rule in many offices, and coming back empty-handed can draw a raised eyebrow even if nobody says a word.
I used to think this was pure obligation, until I noticed how much care goes into matching the sweet to the group: something that keeps for a week, splits neatly, and needs no fork. Many of these sweets are newer than they look, invented within the last century by a local shop or a railway company hoping to sell something on the platform.
QWhy do people buy dozens of small wrapped sweets instead of one big box?
Because the sweets are meant to be split up and handed out, usually one piece per coworker or neighbor. A box that divides cleanly into individually wrapped pieces is more useful than a bigger, nicer-looking single item.
QDo people actually enjoy these sweets, or is it just an obligation?
Both are true at once. The sweets are genuinely good, which is why certain ones become famous, but buying one after a trip is also close to expected, especially for close coworkers.
QHow do people choose which one to buy?
By where they traveled and who they're giving it to: something clearly tied to that region, individually wrapped, and with a shelf life long enough to survive a full workweek before it's handed out.
