The chrysanthemum is an autumn flower that occupies an unusual number of positions in Japanese life at once. It is the crest of the imperial house, and a simplified sixteen-petal version appears on the cover of a Japanese passport and on government documents.
It is also the flower of death: white chrysanthemums are the standard offering at funerals and on graves, which is why giving them as a gift to someone in Japan is a mistake. At the same time it is a competitive hobby flower.
Autumn chrysanthemum exhibitions display single blooms grown to the size of a dinner plate, and cascades trained along frames, and some towns build life-size figures dressed in living chrysanthemums. There is also a small edible variety that appears as a garnish or a vinegared side dish. The ninth day of the ninth month was traditionally the chrysanthemum festival, the last of the five seasonal festivals.
菊は秋の花で、日本の暮らしの中で異例なほど多くの位置を同時に占めています。皇室の紋であり、十六の花弁を簡略にした形が日本の旅券の表紙や公文書に現れます。

秋の菊花展には皿ほどの大きさに育てた一輪や、枠に沿って流れるように仕立てたものが並び、生きた菊で衣装を着せた等身大の人形を作る町もあります。小さな食用の品種もあり、料理の彩りや酢の物として出ます。九月九日は重陽、菊の節句で、五節句の最後に当たります。

Avoid it, especially white ones, because they are strongly associated with funerals and graves. Small colored varieties in a mixed arrangement are less loaded, but if you want a safe gift flower, choose something else.
避けてください。とくに白いものは葬儀と墓に強く結びついています。色のついた小ぶりの品種が寄せ植えに混ざっている程度なら重くありませんが、贈る花として無難なものを選ぶなら別の花にしてください。

It is a chrysanthemum design closely related to it but not identical. The imperial crest has sixteen petals in a doubled arrangement; the passport uses a simpler single-layer sixteen-petal form.

菊は中国から伝わり、平安時代には重陽の節句に菊の花を浮かべた酒を飲む習わしがありました。皇室の紋として定着したのは鎌倉時代の後鳥羽上皇が好んで用いたことによるとされます。菊人形は江戸時代後期に始まった見世物で、今も各地で催されています。食用菊は東北地方でよく食べられ、山形の「もってのほか」などの品種があります。葬儀に白菊を使うのは近代以降に広まった習慣です。
