Kigurumi literally means something you put on and get wrapped up in. In Japan it usually means the big character costumes worn by performers at theme parks, sports games, and town events. Outside Japan, the word often means animal-shaped pajamas, which in Japan are usually called kigurumi pajamas to make the difference clear. The idea is the same: you become the character.

In Japan, almost every town, sports team, and big company seems to have a mascot, and many of them come to life as kigurumi. The word means a costume you climb inside and get wrapped up in. A performer wears the whole body, head and all, and then walks, waves, and dances as the character.
Japan has a long history with this. In the original 1954 Godzilla film, the monster was played by an actor inside a heavy suit, and costumed heroes and monsters have filled children's TV ever since. There is also an unwritten rule: the person inside is never mentioned.
Fans politely pretend the character is real, and the performers rarely speak. Interestingly, if you say kigurumi outside Japan, many people will think of cute animal pajamas instead. So when you explain the word, it helps to say which one you mean. I always think the job looks fun, but on a hot summer day it must be exhausting.
