Jugyo sankan means "class observation." A few times a year, schools invite parents to come and watch a normal lesson. Parents stand along the back wall while the teacher teaches and the children answer questions. It is often followed by a meeting between the homeroom teacher and the parents. Kids often feel nervous and excited, and many look back to find their parents.

In Japanese schools, there are special days called jugyo sankan, which means class observation. On these days, parents and other family members come to school and watch a regular lesson. They do not sit with their children. Instead, they stand in a line along the back of the classroom, many of them holding slippers they brought from home, because at most schools visitors take off their shoes too.

The lesson is supposed to be a normal one, but in reality many teachers plan something where every child can raise a hand or present something. Children often keep turning around to see whether their parents came. After the lesson, there is often a meeting where the homeroom teacher talks to the parents about the class.

Schools usually hold these days a few times a year, and some hold them on a weekend so working parents can come, and give the children a weekday off instead. Personally, I think jugyo sankan shows something important about Japanese schools: parents are expected to stay closely involved, not just at home but at school too.
