Hariko is Japan's version of papier-mache. Craftspeople paste layers of washi paper over a wooden or clay mold, let it dry, take the mold out, and paint the hollow shell. Many traditional folk toys are made this way, including daruma dolls and the red nodding cow called akabeko. They are light, cheap to make, and often sold as lucky charms.

Hariko is a traditional Japanese way of making things out of paper, similar to papier-mache. First, a craftsperson makes a mold out of wood or clay. Then they paste layer after layer of washi, Japanese paper, over the mold. When the paper is dry and hard, they cut it open, take out the mold, and glue the shell back together.

Finally, they paint it in bright colors. Because the inside is hollow, the finished piece is very light. Many of Japan's best-known folk toys are made this way. Daruma dolls are hariko, and so is akabeko, the red cow from Aizu in Fukushima whose head bobs when you touch it.

There is also the inu-hariko, a paper dog given to protect babies and wish for an easy birth. In Japanese, the phrase "a hariko tiger" describes someone who looks strong but is weak inside, much like "paper tiger" in English. I find it amazing that such simple paper can last for years.

Q

Is a daruma really made of paper?

Yes, traditional daruma are hariko. Layers of paper are shaped over a mold, and a weight is put in the bottom so it rolls back up when you push it over.

Q

Why does the akabeko's head move?

The head is a separate piece that hangs inside the body and is balanced so it bobs when touched. People say the nodding brings good luck, and it's a popular souvenir from Aizu.
