Many Japanese junior high schools hold a choir contest once a year, often in the fall. Each class chooses a song, practices for weeks before or after school, and sings on stage in front of the whole school and parents. Judges rank the classes, and students take the result seriously. It's less about singing talent and more about the whole class working together.

Gassho konkuru is a choir contest held at many Japanese junior high schools, and at some elementary and high schools as well. Each class is one team. The students choose a song, usually a Japanese choral piece written for school choirs, and pick a conductor and a pianist from among themselves.

For several weeks, they practice in the morning, at lunchtime, or after school. On the day of the contest, every class sings on stage, and judges, often teachers, choose the winners. What surprises many people is that nobody gets to choose whether to take part. Everyone in the class sings, whether they like singing or not.

That's exactly why it can get dramatic. Some students push hard, others feel forced, and arguments during practice are common. Still, many Japanese adults remember the choir contest as the moment their class finally came together. I can still sing the song my class performed in ninth grade.

Q

Do students have to sing even if they're bad at it?

Usually, yes. It's a class event, so everyone takes part. Teachers tend to care more about effort and teamwork than about how good your voice is.

Q

What kind of songs do they sing?

Mostly Japanese choral songs written for school choirs, often about friendship, growing up, or nature. Some schools also allow arrangements of pop songs.

Q

Is it the same as the school choir club?

No. A choir club is for students who choose to join, and it enters outside competitions. The gassho konkuru is held inside the school, and every class takes part, like sports day.
