Doujin music is music made and sold completely outside the major record label system, produced by individuals or small groups called circles who write, record, press and sell it themselves, usually at a table they rent at a fan event. A huge share of it consists of arrangements of existing game and anime music, reworked into new genres from rock to electronic to jazz, though a great deal of fully original work exists too.
The scene grew out of Comic Market, the giant manga fan convention, when musicians there felt underserved by a market focused on print, and in 1998 they started M3, a dedicated music-only event that now runs twice a year and draws thousands of circles. What makes it interesting is the career path it has quietly become. A number of professional composers and singers working in games and anime today got their start selling homemade CDs from a folding table, and some still release doujin work on the side even after going professional.

Strictly, most of it is not formally licensed, but many rights holders quietly tolerate small-scale doujin releases because they generate goodwill and rarely compete with official sales. It is a gray area kept alive by an unwritten understanding rather than a clear legal right.
厳密には正式な許諾を得ていないものがほとんどですが、多くの権利者は好意的な広がりを生み、公式の売り上げとほとんど競合しないという理由で、小規模な同人作品を黙認しています。明確な権利というより、暗黙の了解で成り立つグレーゾーンです。
QHow do people find doujin music if it's not on major streaming services?
大手の配信にないなら、どうやって同人音楽を見つけるのですか。
Events like M3 are the main venue, along with specialty online shops and, increasingly, platforms where circles upload tracks directly. Word of mouth and circle fan bases built up over years matter more than algorithmic discovery.
M3のようなイベントが主な場で、専門のオンラインショップや、サークルが直接楽曲をアップロードできる配信サービスも増えています。アルゴリズムによる発見より、口コミと長年かけて築いたサークルのファン層のほうが重要です。

They overlap heavily. Many Vocaloid producers sell their work through doujin circles and events like M3, but doujin music is the broader category, covering original songs, game arrangements and vocal work with human singers as well.
