A denden daiko is the simplest instrument most Japanese people have held. It is a small drum with a skin on each face, fixed to a handle, and two beads hanging from short cords at the sides. You do not hit it. You hold the handle between your palms and roll it back and forth, and the beads swing out and strike each head in turn, which produces the rattling sound the name imitates.
Babies find this fascinating. It has two jobs. The obvious one is as a toy, and it is still a standard gift at a birth or a first festival for a child. The less obvious one is protective: like bells at a shrine and the clappers of a night watchman, the sound was understood to drive off what should not be near a small child, so it was given as much as a charm as a plaything.
The form is not uniquely Japanese: the same design appears in China, Korea, India and Tibet, in ritual as well as play. The Japanese version is small, brightly painted, and firmly a thing for infants.
でんでん太鼓は、多くの日本人が手に取ったことのある、最も簡素な楽器でしょう。両面に皮を張った小さな太鼓に柄を付け、左右から短い紐で玉を二つ吊るしてあります。叩くのではありません。柄を手のひらではさんで前後に転がすと、玉が振れて、両面を交互に打つ。その音をそのまま写したのが名前です。
赤ん坊はこれに夢中になります。理由は、誰もうまく説明できません。役目は二つあります。分かりやすいのは玩具としての役目で、出産の祝いや初節句の贈り物として、いまも定番です。分かりにくいほうは魔除けです。神社の鈴や夜回りの拍子木と同じように、その音が、小さな子のそばに寄ってはいけないものを払うと考えられていました。
ですから玩具であると同時に、守りの品として贈られたのです。この形は日本だけのものではありません。同じ仕掛けの太鼓は中国、朝鮮、インド、チベットにもあり、遊びにも儀礼にも使われます。ただ日本のものは小さく、色鮮やかに塗られ、はっきり乳児のための品になっています。

でんでん太鼓は、柄を回して両側の玉で鼓面を打つ「振鼓（ふりつづみ）」の系統の楽器で、中国の鼗鼓（とうこ）にさかのぼるとされる。雅楽の楽器にも同じ仕組みのものがある。日本では江戸時代から赤ん坊の玩具として広まり、初節句や出産祝いの品とされてきた。宮城の松川だるまや各地の郷土玩具にも、でんでん太鼓を持つ意匠が見られる。チベット仏教で用いられるダマルも同じ仕掛けの太鼓である。
