A department head is addressed as bucho, not by name, and a section head as kacho. Colleagues at your own level take their family name plus san. The title replaces the name entirely, so you can work with someone for years and rarely say their surname aloud.

One of the first adjustments in a Japanese workplace is how you address people. Someone senior is called by their job title, not their name: bucho for a department head, kacho for a section head, shacho for the company president. The title stands alone as a form of address, so you say excuse me, bucho, the way English might say excuse me, doctor.

Colleagues at your own level or below take their family name plus san, and first names are used only among close friends or when two people share a surname. Titles appear in email too, usually as name plus title. Two trends are worth knowing.

Some companies have deliberately abolished titles in address, requiring everyone to use san, precisely because the hierarchy of address was thought to suppress discussion, and this san-zuke policy is now common in technology firms and some large manufacturers. And clients are always sama, regardless of what their own company calls them.

QWhat do I call someone with no title?

Family name plus san, which is the safe default for anyone. Adding san to a title, as in bucho-san, sounds odd in most companies and is usually avoided.

QHow do I refer to my own boss to an outside client?

By family name with no title and no san, because within the conversation your whole company is the humble side. Saying Tanaka wa, not Tanaka-bucho wa, is correct.

QIs the san-zuke movement real?

Yes. A number of large companies now require everyone to be addressed as san, including executives, on the argument that titles in address discourage junior staff from speaking up.

  • Excuse me, section head.
  • Mr Tanaka from our side will call you.
  • We use san for everyone here.
  • What should I call you?
  • Please just use my surname.

  • addressing everyone as sanさん付け
  • humble form for one's own side謙譲の言い方
