Most Japanese regular employees receive a bonus in June or July and again in December, often worth one to three months' salary each. It is not a reward for individual performance so much as a customary part of annual pay, adjusted by company results. Household budgets, car purchases and mortgage plans are built around it, and shops run bonus-season sales. Part-time and contract workers usually get little or none.

The English word bonus means something different in Japan. Here it is not an occasional reward for hitting a target but a scheduled payment, made twice a year to most full-time employees, in early summer and in December. Each one is typically worth a couple of months' salary, so a large share of a worker's annual income arrives in two lumps.
The amount moves with the company's results and, in unionized firms, is negotiated each year, but the expectation that it will arrive is strong enough that people plan mortgages with special bonus-month payments and buy cars and appliances in bonus season. Retailers time their sales accordingly, and the news reports average bonus figures every year.
Civil servants receive theirs on fixed dates. The system has a downside: it gives employers a flexible cost they can cut in bad years, and it excludes most non-regular workers, who get little or nothing. I think it explains why a Japanese salary number always needs a follow-up question about the bonus.

QIs the bonus guaranteed?
Not by law. It depends on the company's rules and contract, and firms can reduce or skip it in a bad year, which some did during recessions. But at most established companies it is so customary that employees treat it as part of their pay, and unions negotiate it as such.
QHow is the amount decided?
Usually as a multiple of base monthly salary, for example two months, set by the company's results and sometimes adjusted by an individual rating. Large firms and unions announce the figure each year, and the average for big companies is reported in the news as an economic indicator.
QDo part-timers and contract workers get a bonus?
Most get none or a token amount, which is one of the biggest gaps between regular and non-regular employment in Japan. Recent rules on equal treatment have pushed some companies to pay something to long-serving non-regular staff, but the difference remains large.
