日本は地図の上では小さな国ですが、話し方は地域によって大きく変わります。旅行先で聞いた言葉について、外国人に「今のはどういう意味?」と聞かれることもあるでしょう。このページでは北海道から沖縄までの方言34語を、例文と、今も誰が使っているのかという正直な説明を添えて、そのまま伝えられる英語でまとめました。
📝 教える前に知っておきたいこと
- 日本では誰もが標準語を理解します。方言を知らなくても困ることはありませんが、いくつか聞き分けられると、地元の人との会話がぐっと温かくなると伝えましょう。
- 方言は、お年寄りや地方でいちばん強く使われる傾向があります。若い人の多くは、地元のなまりといくつかの地元の言葉が混じった、標準語に近い話し方をします。
- 境目ははっきりしていません。ある都市の言葉として紹介したものが、もっと広い地域で聞かれることも多く、隣の地域の人が細かな違いを主張することもあります。
- 旅行者が「めんそーれ」や「おおきに」のような地元のあいさつを使うと、地元の人はたいてい喜んでくれます。ただし、からかっているように感じられる形でなまりをまねるのは避けましょう。
- 沖縄の伝統的な言葉は標準語とあまりに違うため、琉球諸語を別の言語として扱う言語学者もいます。現在の沖縄の日常の話し言葉は、ほとんどが日本語に地元の言葉が混じったものです。

In standard Japanese nageru means "to throw" (like a ball), but in Hokkaido and parts of Tohoku it also means "to throw out." People from elsewhere sometimes imagine someone literally tossing trash across the room.
標準語の「投げる」は(ボールなどを)投げるという意味ですが、北海道や東北の一部では「捨てる」の意味にもなります。ほかの地域の人は、ごみを部屋の向こうへ本当に放り投げている様子を思い浮かべることがあります。

Be and dabe are widely heard in eastern and northern Japan, including Tohoku, Hokkaido, and parts of the Kanto countryside. On TV they are often used to signal a rural character, but for many people it is simply everyday speech.
「べ」「だべ」は、東北、北海道、関東の農村部の一部など、東日本や北日本で広く聞かれます。テレビでは田舎の人物を表すのによく使われますが、多くの人にとってはふだんの話し言葉にすぎません。

Famous from TV dramas about Sakamoto Ryoma, a 19th-century figure from Tosa (today's Kochi). The example is a drama-style line, not everyday talk. In real modern Kochi speech, zeyo is much less common than its image suggests.
土佐(今の高知県)出身の19世紀の人物、坂本龍馬を描いたテレビドラマで有名になりました。例文はドラマ風のせりふで、ふだんの会話ではありません。実際の現代の高知の言葉では、「ぜよ」はイメージよりずっと使われていません。

「気にしないで」「大丈夫」と簡単に訳されがちですが、もとは「正しいことを誠実にしていれば、物事はうまくいく」という長い言葉から来ている、とよく説明されます。つまり、いいかげんでいいという意味ではなく、自分のやるべきことをしたうえで、あとは気にしない、という感覚がこもっています。
