2020年代の流行語30選を英語で説明|推し・タイパ・蛙化現象を外国人に伝えよう
日本のSNSからは毎年新しい言葉が生まれ、そのうちのいくつかが定着します。「推しって英語で何?」「タイパって何の略?」と外国人に聞かれても、うまく説明できる人は意外と少ないものです。このページでは、2020年代に広く広まり、いまもSNSやテレビの字幕、お店の看板で見かける流行語30語を、外国人にそのまま言える英語の説明と例文つきで紹介します。多くはファン文化や若者から生まれたくだけた言葉なので、友だちとの会話向きで、就職の面接には向きません。年は確認できたものだけ書いています。
📝 教える前に知っておきたいこと
- ここにある言葉は、ほとんどがくだけた言葉です。友だちやネット上で使い、職場や年上の人には標準的な日本語に切りかえるよう伝えましょう。
- 流行語はすぐに古くなります。30歳の人には新しく感じる言葉が、高校生には少し古く聞こえることもありますし、その逆もあります。
- この多くは、アイドル・アニメ・K-POPなどのファン文化から生まれた言葉です。日本のファンの友だちがいる外国人には、会話のきっかけとしてぴったりです。
- 日本では毎年12月にその年の流行語が選ばれます。受賞した言葉には、すぐに消えていくスポーツやテレビの決めぜりふもあるので、日常で使うためというより、文化として知っておくためのものです。

From the verb osu (to push, to recommend). It means more than "favorite": it is someone you actively support with time and money. It can be a person, a character, or even a train line or a snack.

文字どおりは「自分の解釈と一致する」です。キャラクターや俳優、新しい写真が、自分の思い描いていた姿にぴったり合うときに使います。反対は「解釈違い」(私の思うその人じゃない)です。

Genkai means limit. People use it about themselves in a self-mocking way, often when they can only type broken sentences after a big announcement. Calling someone else this can sound rude.
「限界」はリミットのことです。自分について自虐的に使うことが多く、大きな発表のあと、まともな文章が打てなくなったときなどに使います。他人をこう呼ぶと失礼に聞こえることがあります。

「カエル化」という意味で、カエルの王子さまの話を逆にしたところから名づけられました。もとは、自分の気持ちに相手が応えてくれたとたんに冷めてしまうことでしたが、若い人はいま、相手のちょっと痛い行動を見て冷めることに使います。2023年の「新語・流行語大賞」でトップテンに入りました。

Short for kosuto pafomansu. It is older than most words here and used by every generation, including in ads and reviews. "Kosupa ga ii" means good value, not "cheap."

Short for katsudo (activity). Shukatsu (job hunting) came first, and then konkatsu (looking for a spouse), asakatsu (morning self-improvement) and many more followed. Some are standard words now; new ones are made up all the time.
「活動」を縮めた言葉です。最初に「就活」(就職活動)があり、その後「婚活」(結婚相手探し)、「朝活」(朝の自分磨き)などが次々に生まれました。標準語になったものもあり、新しい言葉もいつも作られています。

The normal meaning is "to be arranged or ready." Sauna fans use it for the calm, light-headed feeling after the hot-cold-rest cycle. It is often written in hiragana to show the special meaning. Don't push yourself to reach it; people with health concerns should be careful with sudden temperature changes.
ふつうの意味は「そろう」「準備ができる」です。サウナ好きは、熱い・冷たい・休憩をくり返したあとの、穏やかで頭がふわっと軽くなる感覚にこの言葉を使います。特別な意味だとわかるよう、ひらがなで書くことが多いです。無理をしてまで目指さないように。健康に不安がある人は、急な温度変化に気をつけましょう。

Anken is a business word for a case or a project. Young people use it jokingly: "shuku anken" (something to celebrate), "tsuho anken" (so bad someone should report it). On social media, "anken" alone can also mean a paid promotion by an influencer.
「案件」は仕事の案件やプロジェクトを指すビジネス用語です。若い人は冗談で「祝い案件」(お祝いすべきこと)、「通報案件」(通報されてもおかしくないほどひどい)のように使います。SNSでは「案件」だけで、インフルエンサーの有料の宣伝を指すこともあります。

「二刀流」は、刀を二本使って戦う侍の戦い方です。「ショータイム」とともに、2021年の「新語・流行語大賞」の年間大賞に選ばれました。「二刀流」は、二つの仕事や技を同時にこなす人にも使われます。
