30 Japanese Buzzwords of the 2020s: Oshi, Taipa, Kaeruka and More (With Real Examples)

Japanese social media produces new words every year, and a few of them stick. These are buzzwords that spread widely in the 2020s and that you will still see on social media, TV captions and shop signs. Most are casual and come from fan culture or young people, so use them with friends, not in a job interview. We note the year only where we could confirm it.

📝 Before you start
  • Almost all of these are casual. Use them with friends or online, and switch to standard Japanese at work or with older people.
  • Buzzwords age fast. A word that feels fresh to a 30-year-old may already sound a little old to a high school student, and the reverse is also true.
  • Many of these words come from fan culture (idols, anime, K-pop). If you know a Japanese fan, this vocabulary is a great way to start a conversation.
  • Japan picks buzzwords of the year every December. Some winners are sports or TV catchphrases that fade quickly, so knowing them is more about culture than daily use.
