The shortest answer that works

Shukatsu is the synchronized job hunt in which Japanese companies hire a whole year group of students at once.

The standard explanation

Japanese companies traditionally hire new graduates as a single cohort, all starting on the first of April. Students begin applying more than a year before graduating, attend information sessions, sit aptitude tests and multiple interviews, and everyone wears the same plain dark suit. Offers are given long before graduation.

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Shukatsu is the Japanese job hunt, and its defining feature is that it is synchronized. Rather than hiring when a position opens, large companies recruit a whole cohort of students who graduate in the same March and start together on the first of April.

Students begin more than a year ahead: information sessions, aptitude tests, group discussions, and often four or five rounds of interviews, all while still attending university. The uniformity is striking. Everyone wears the same plain dark suit, white shirt and simple shoes, hair tied back, and there are shops and magazines devoted to getting this exactly right, because standing out is a risk rather than an advantage.

Companies hire for potential and fit rather than for a specific skill, on the assumption that they will train you and that you may be moved between departments. That assumption is weakening: mid-career hiring is rising and some firms have moved to hiring for defined roles, but the spring cohort remains the main road in.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhy does everyone wear the same suit?

Because the aim is to give no reason to be rejected. The recruit suit is a plain dark two-piece with a white shirt, and deviating from it is read as not understanding the situation rather than as individuality.

QWhat happens if you miss the cohort?

It used to be a serious disadvantage, and the generation that graduated into the post-bubble slump suffered lasting harm from it. It matters less now, with more mid-career hiring and schemes for graduates within a few years of leaving, but the spring intake is still the widest door.

QWhen do students actually get offers?

Well before graduation. Under the current government-led schedule, publicity for the following year's intake opens in March and selection formally begins in June, with informal offers following. In practice many are settled earlier.
