Japanese bathhouses almost always have a sauna and, right next to it, a cold water bath. The standard routine is to sweat, plunge into cold water, then sit and rest, and repeat three times. The feeling people chase at the end has its own word, totonou, meaning something like getting properly tuned. Rinse your sweat off before the cold bath.

Sauna in Japan is not the Finnish experience transplanted. The heat room is only the first third of it. The routine is sauna, then a cold water bath kept at around sixteen or seventeen degrees, then sitting still in the air for several minutes, and you go round that three times.
The state people are after arrives during the sitting, and it has a name of its own, totonou, which means something like being brought into tune. Over the last decade this turned from an older men's habit into a broad enthusiasm with magazines, dedicated facilities and a vocabulary.
The etiquette is specific and worth knowing. Rinse your body before entering the sauna, sit on the towel provided, rinse your sweat off completely before getting into the cold bath, and do not put your head under. Some facilities run a ceremony where staff wave hot air at bathers with a towel, and you can decline it politely.
QWhy do I have to rinse before the cold bath?
Because the cold bath is shared still water, and sweat goes straight into it. There is a shower or a bucket right beside it for this. Skipping the rinse is the single thing most likely to get you spoken to.
QIs the cold bath safe?
For most healthy people, entering slowly and staying under a minute is fine. Do not do it after drinking, do not dive in, and get out if your chest tightens. People with heart conditions or high blood pressure should ask a doctor first.
