If you whistle at night in a Japanese home, someone might stop you and say, "You'll call snakes." It's one of the most common superstitions children hear in Japan, and the details change from family to family. Some say snakes will come, others say thieves, ghosts or even kidnappers.

Nobody knows exactly where it started, but there are a few popular explanations. One is that thieves and other people up to no good used whistles as signals in the dark, so whistling at night could make you look suspicious. Another is that whistling was thought to call spirits.

The simplest one is that it was just a way to keep children quiet at night so they wouldn't bother the neighbors. Like the rule about not cutting your nails at night, it's the kind of thing people stop believing as adults but still remember. I still hesitate to whistle after dark, even though I know there are no snakes in my apartment.

Q

Why snakes?

No one really knows. Snakes were a familiar and slightly scary part of country life, so they made a good warning for children. In some places it isn't snakes at all, but thieves or ghosts.

Q

Do adults actually believe it?

Almost no one believes it literally. But many people remember being told it as kids, and some still avoid whistling at night just out of habit.

Q

Is whistling rude in Japan?

Not exactly rude, but you rarely hear people whistle on trains or in shops. Outdoors and among friends, it's no problem.
