If you stay with a Japanese family, you might hear someone say, "Don't cut your nails at night." The full saying is that if you do, you will not be at your parents' side when they die. That sounds dramatic, and most people do not take it literally, but it stays in the back of many people's minds.
No one knows exactly where it came from, and there are several theories. One is practical: before electric lights, people cut their nails with small knives or scissors, and doing that in the dark could easily lead to an injury.
Another is wordplay: "yozume," or night nails, sounds like "yo-zume," an old word that can suggest cutting your life short. Personally, I still hesitate a little before cutting my nails in the evening, even though I know it is only a superstition.
日本の家庭にホームステイすると、「夜に爪を切っちゃだめ」と言われることがあるかもしれません。言い伝えの全体は、夜に爪を切ると親の死に目に会えない、というものです。大げさに聞こえますし、ほとんどの人は文字どおりには受け取っていませんが、多くの人の頭の片隅に残っています。

もう一つは語呂合わせで、「夜爪」が、命を縮めることを思わせる「世詰め」と同じ音だから、という説です。私自身、ただの迷信だと分かっていても、夜に爪を切る前には今でも少しためらいます。
