Tomioka Silk Mill in Gunma Prefecture is a good place to understand how Japan modernized. In the late 1800s, raw silk was one of Japan's most important exports, but most of it was made by hand, and the quality was uneven. So in 1872, the new Meiji government opened a large model factory in Tomioka.
A French silk expert, Paul Brunat, helped plan it, and the factory used French reeling machines. Young women came from many parts of Japan to work and learn the new methods, and some of them later taught these skills in their home regions.
The buildings are made with a wooden frame and red brick, a mix of Western and Japanese building methods. The mill was sold to private companies in 1893, and it kept producing silk until 1987. In 2014, it was listed as a World Heritage Site. When I walk through the long reeling hall, I can imagine how busy it must have been.

Why did Japan need a model silk factory?
Silk was a key export, and the new government needed money to modernize the country. By showing how machines could make silk of steady quality, it hoped other factories would follow.
