A tachinomi is a bar without chairs. You stand at a counter or a waist-high shelf, order drinks and small dishes one at a time, pay as you go or at the end, and leave after an hour or so. Removing the seats keeps the turnover high and the prices low, and it makes going in alone easy, because standing next to a stranger does not commit you to anything.
立ち飲みは椅子のない酒場です。カウンターか腰の高さの棚に立ち、酒と小皿を一品ずつ頼み、その都度か最後に払って、一時間ほどで出ます。椅子をなくせば回転が上がり、値段が下がります。一人で入りやすいのも同じ理由で、見知らぬ人の隣に立つことは、何かを約束することにならないからです。

A tachinomi is a standing bar, and the absence of chairs explains almost everything about it. Because nobody sits, the turnover is fast, the rent is spread over more customers, and the prices come down: a glass of sake or a beer and two or three small dishes will often come to under two thousand yen.
The food is simple and quick — grilled skewers, simmered offal, pickles, a plate of sashimi — and you order one thing at a time rather than all at once. Payment is either as you go, with the staff keeping a tally, or on a small chit you hand over at the end. The social part is what makes it worth recommending to a visitor.
Standing is non-committal, so going in on your own is completely normal, and conversations with the person next to you start and end without obligation. Many tachinomi are near stations and fill up between six and eight with people stopping on the way home. The expectation is that you have a drink or two and go, not that you settle in for the evening.
立ち飲みは立って飲む酒場で、椅子がないことが、この店のほとんどを説明します。誰も座らないので回転が速く、家賃が多くの客に分散され、値段が下がります。日本酒かビール一杯と小皿を二、三品で、二千円に届かないことも多い。
料理は簡単で早いものです。串焼き、もつ煮、漬物、刺身の小皿。一度にまとめず、一品ずつ頼みます。支払いは、その都度渡すか、店が付けておいて最後に紙で受け取るかのどちらかです。旅行者に勧める値打ちがあるのは、人との距離のほうです。
立っているというのは何も約束しないことなので、一人で入るのがまったくふつうですし、隣の人との話も、始まるときも終わるときも義理が残りません。多くの立ち飲みは駅の近くにあり、六時から八時ごろ、帰り道に寄る人で混みます。前提は、一杯か二杯飲んで出ること。腰を据えて一晩過ごす場所ではありません。

早く帰るのは失礼ですか。
The opposite. Staying an hour and moving on is the expected pattern, and lingering for three hours at a busy counter would be the unusual thing.
むしろ逆です。一時間ほどで次へ移るのが想定された形で、混んだカウンターに三時間いるほうが、めずらしいことになります。
QCan I go alone?
一人でも入れますか。
Yes, and a large share of customers are alone. This is one of the easiest kinds of bar in Japan to enter by yourself.
入れますし、客のかなりの割合が一人です。日本の酒場のなかで、一人でいちばん入りやすい部類です。
QHow do I pay?
支払いはどうしますか。
Either each time you order, or at the end from a chit. Ask when you arrive; cash is safest, as many older standing bars still do not take cards.
頼むたびに払うか、最後に紙で精算するかです。入ったときに尋ねてください。現金が確実です。古い立ち飲みはカードを扱わない店が多くあります。
誤解されやすい

FACTThey are ordinary and increasingly mixed. Cheap wine bars and standing sushi counters use the same format, and office workers of all kinds use them.
ふつうの店で、客層も広がっています。安いワインの店や立ち食いの寿司も同じ形ですし、あらゆる勤め人が使っています。

立ち飲みは、江戸時代の酒屋で升のまま飲ませた「角打ち」に流れをたどることが多い。角打ちは、いまも北九州などで酒販店の一角で飲ませる形として残っている。2000年代以降、低価格で一人でも入りやすい業態として都市部で再び増え、ワインや寿司の立ち飲み店も広がった。回転を上げるため、席数ではなく客の滞在時間で設計されている点が、通常の居酒屋と異なる。
