Settai means hosting a client or a business partner: a good restaurant, a bar afterward, or a round of golf at the weekend, paid for by the company that wants the relationship. The host chooses the venue, seats the guest in the place of honor, keeps their glass full and never talks hard business. It was enormous in the bubble years and has shrunk since, but it remains a normal part of sales work in many industries.

Settai is the practice of entertaining people you do business with, and it is a core skill in Japanese sales and procurement. A supplier invites the buyer to dinner at a restaurant chosen for its reputation, seats them in the best position, pours their drinks, orders the food and picks up the bill.
Golf on a Saturday is the other classic form. What matters is that the evening is not a negotiation; the deal is discussed at the office, and the dinner exists to make the two sides comfortable enough to trust each other. In the 1980s bubble, settai spending was legendary, with expense accounts covering high-end clubs and gifts.
Since then, tighter budgets, tax rules on entertainment expenses, and compliance concerns, especially around public officials who may not accept it at all, have cut it back sharply. Today a settai is more likely a modest dinner, and a younger buyer may prefer no dinner at all. I think the practice is honest about something universal: people buy from people they like.

QAs the guest, what am I expected to do?
Arrive on time, take the seat you are shown, let the host order, accept the first drink, and thank them warmly, ideally with a short message the next morning. Do not try to pay; offering once is polite, insisting is not. Talking business lightly is fine, but let the host lead.
QIsn't this just bribery?
There is a line, and Japanese law and company rules draw it. Entertaining a private-sector client within reasonable limits is legal and disclosed as an expense; entertaining a public official can be a crime; and many large companies now cap what employees may accept. The gray zone is real, which is why compliance departments watch it.
QDoes settai still happen much?
Less than before and less in some industries than others. Construction, pharmaceuticals, advertising and traditional manufacturing still do it; tech firms and foreign companies much less. The pandemic years cut it further, and some relationships moved to lunch or simply to better service.
MYTHJapanese business is done over drinks, so the real decisions happen at settai.
FACTThe decisions happen at the office, usually through consensus procedures; settai builds the trust that makes those procedures go smoothly, and talking hard terms at dinner is considered poor form.
