Satoyama is the belt of land between settlement and deep mountain: coppiced woods, rice terraces, ponds and grassland. Villagers cut the trees on a cycle for firewood and charcoal, gathered leaf litter for fertilizer and cut grass for thatch, and that repeated disturbance is what kept the mix of habitats. As fuel changed and villages emptied, many satoyama went unmanaged, and species that depended on the cutting declined.

Satoyama cuts against what many people assume about conservation. It is the land between a village and the mountains behind it: broadleaf woods, rice terraces, irrigation ponds, grassland and the paths between them. The key point is that this landscape is not wilderness and was never meant to be.
Villagers cut the oak and chestnut on a cycle of ten or twenty years for firewood and charcoal, raked leaves for fertilizer, cut grass for thatch, and kept water moving through the paddies. That constant cutting let light reach the forest floor, which is why satoyama supports species a dense closed forest does not: the fireflies, dragonflies and spring wildflowers Japanese people associate with childhood.
Then fuel switched to gas and oil, fertilizer came in bags, and rural populations aged and shrank. The woods were left uncut, grew dark, and the species that needed light went with the light. So the problem here is unusual: the task is not to protect the land from people but to persuade people to use it again, and volunteers now do the cutting villagers once did for fuel.
QSo satoyama is man-made?
Shaped by people, yes. The trees and animals are native, but the structure of the landscape — open woods, ponds, terraces — exists because of centuries of use.
QWhat happens if it's abandoned?
The canopy closes, bamboo often takes over, the ponds silt up, and light-demanding plants and insects disappear. Wild boar and deer also move closer to the houses.
QCan I see one?
Easily. Many suburbs have a conserved satoyama park with volunteer-run woodland, and rice terrace areas are open to walk through. They are ordinary countryside, not protected reserves.
MYTHSatoyama means untouched Japanese nature.
FACTIt is the opposite: a landscape kept diverse by continual human cutting and gathering. Left alone, it loses much of what made it valuable.
