Fireflies appear in Japan for a few weeks in early summer, usually June, along clean streams. Going out at dusk to watch them is a recognized seasonal activity, and many towns run firefly nights. The two common species are the larger genji firefly and the smaller heike firefly, both named after warrior clans from a twelfth-century war.

Firefly watching is one of those Japanese customs that lasts about two weeks a year and then vanishes. In early summer, usually June, fireflies rise from clean streams at dusk, and people walk out along the water to watch without torches or flash photography. The two species most people see are named after the Genji and the Heike, the two clans of a famous twelfth-century war, which tells you how old the association is.
There is a detail worth knowing: the genji fireflies in western Japan flash at roughly twice the speed of those in the east, an east-west difference researchers have documented. Because the larvae need clean running water, fireflies disappeared from many places during the rapid growth years and have been brought back by local restoration efforts, so a firefly night is often also a story about a river that was cleaned up.
QWhy can't I use a flash or a torch?
Because light disrupts the flashing they use to find each other, and a bright beam will clear an area. Most firefly sites ask for phones face down and no white light. Some hand out red cellophane to cover a torch.
QWhen exactly should I go?
Usually mid to late June in much of Honshu, later further north. Warm, humid, windless evenings without moonlight are best, and the peak is roughly an hour after sunset. Local tourism sites post nightly counts during the season.
