Japan is unusual not for having four seasons but for how much of daily life is organized around them.

Every temperate country has four seasons, so saying Japan has them explains nothing. What is distinctive is how far the seasons reach into ordinary life: the menu at a chain restaurant, the design on a sweet, the words at the top of a letter, the flavor of a soft drink. The old calendar divided the year into twenty-four terms and then into seventy-two five-day micro-seasons.

Japanese people often say that Japan has four seasons, and visitors sometimes find that puzzling, because so does most of the world. The point is not the existence of the seasons but how deeply the year is divided.
The traditional calendar splits the year into twenty-four solar terms, and then splits each of those into three, giving seventy-two micro-seasons of about five days. Each has a name describing one thing happening outside: swallows return, the first frost falls, crickets sing at the door.
You can see the effect everywhere. Letters begin with a line about the weather. Sweets change shape with the month. Even a convenience store shifts its shelves four times a year. What Japan really has is not four seasons but a strong habit of noticing which part of the year you are standing in.

QIsn't 'Japan has four seasons' a bit of a cliché?
It is, and Japanese people get teased about it. The useful version is to talk about the seventy-two micro-seasons, or to give a concrete example like seasonal sweets or seasonal letter openings.
QAre there really only four?
Officially, but in practice there are more. The rainy season in June and July is treated as its own period, and so is the stretch of late-summer heat after the calendar says autumn has begun.
QWhy do letters start with the weather?
It is a fixed form called jiko no aisatsu, a seasonal greeting. Business letters still open this way, and there are set phrases for every month, which people look up rather than invent.
MYTHJapan is special because it has four distinct seasons.

FACTMost temperate countries do. What is distinctive is the density of seasonal vocabulary and the extent to which food, design and language track the calendar.
