Kyodo yokujo are simple bathhouses found in many onsen towns, often just one or two small tubs and a changing area. They were built so that people living there could bathe in the local hot spring every day. Many are kept clean by the residents themselves, and some welcome visitors for a small fee or a donation. They feel very different from a hotel spa: quiet, plain, and used mostly by regulars.

When people think of onsen, they usually picture a hotel with a big bath and a view. But in many hot-spring towns, the heart of the place is a small wooden bathhouse on a back street. This is a kyodo yokujo, a shared public bath.
It was built so that the people who live there could soak in the hot spring every day, the way other people use the bathtub at home. In some towns, local residents form a group that cleans the bath and pays for its upkeep. Nozawa Onsen in Nagano, for example, has thirteen of these baths, and visitors can use them by leaving a small donation.
The water is often very hot, the rooms are plain, and there may be no soap or shampoo at all. For me, that is exactly the charm. If you go, wash before you get in, say a quiet hello to the regulars, and remember that you are a guest in someone's everyday life.

Can tourists use the local shared baths?
Many of them, yes, for a small fee or a donation. But some are for residents only, so check for a sign or ask at your inn before you go in.
Why is the water so hot?
Many shared baths use the spring water just as it comes out of the ground, often without adding cold water. Locals are used to it, but it's fine to pour some water over yourself first and get in slowly.
Do I need to bring anything?
Usually a towel, and soap if you want it. Small shared baths often have no amenities and sometimes no staff at all.
