Kutani yaki is porcelain made in southern Ishikawa Prefecture. It is best known for thick, glossy colors painted on top of the glaze, especially green, yellow, red, purple, and dark blue. The first kilns are thought to date from the mid-1600s, but they closed after about fifty years. Kilns started again in the early 1800s, and the style has continued ever since.

Kutani yaki is a type of porcelain from Ishikawa Prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast. When people see it for the first time, what strikes them is the color. Designs of birds, flowers, and landscapes are painted over the glaze in thick, almost jewel-like layers of green, yellow, red, purple, and deep blue, which are called the five Kutani colors.
The story behind it is unusual. The first kilns are thought to have opened around 1655 under a local lord, but they stopped after about fifty years, and nobody is completely sure why. Pieces from that period are called Old Kutani, and experts still debate where some of them were actually made.
About a hundred years later, in the early 1800s, new kilns brought the style back to life, and it has been made continuously since then. Today you can find everything from museum pieces to everyday mugs. I like it because it shows a side of Japanese design that is loud and confident, not quiet.
Why did the original kilns stop?
Nobody knows for sure. There are several theories, and there are few written records from that time, so it is still an open question.
How is it different from Arita ware?
Both are porcelain, but Kutani is known for thick, heavy overglaze colors that cover much of the surface. Arita often leaves more white space and uses blue underglaze painting.
