Japan's baths are almost all separated by sex. A small number of remote hot springs keep the older mixed form, called konyoku. They are mostly outdoor baths deep in the mountains, and many now ask women to wear a bathing wrap or set aside women-only hours. The number has fallen steadily, and treating konyoku as a typical feature of Japan gives a badly wrong picture.
日本の浴場は、ほとんどが男女別です。山奥の温泉のごく一部に、昔ながらの混浴が残っています。多くは山あいの露天風呂で、女性には湯浴み着を求めたり、女性専用の時間を設けたりする施設が増えました。数は減り続けており、混浴を日本の一般的な姿として話すと、まったく違う印象を与えます。

Visitors sometimes arrive in Japan having read that hot springs are mixed. That was once true and is now the exception. Bathing was mixed in many places until the nineteenth century, when Japan began separating baths by sex, partly in response to Western visitors' reactions.
Today almost every hot spring and public bath has a men's side and a women's side, and mixed baths survive mainly at remote mountain inns and open-air baths. Even there, the practice has changed. Many now require or allow a bathing wrap for women, or set women-only hours in the evening, because otherwise women stop coming.
Some have closed the mixed bath entirely after problems with men who came to stare. If you want to try one, look it up in advance, go early, and behave exactly as you would in any bath: wash first, do not stare, and do not bring a camera anywhere near it. Photographing in any Japanese bath is completely unacceptable.
温泉は男女一緒だと読んで日本に来る方がときどきいます。かつてはそうでしたが、いまは例外です。19世紀まで多くの場所で男女一緒に入っていましたが、日本は浴場を男女に分け始めました。西洋から来た人の反応も一因だったとされます。
いまはほとんどの温泉と銭湯に男湯と女湯があり、混浴が残るのは主に山あいの宿や露天風呂です。そこでも形は変わりました。女性に湯浴み着を認めたり求めたり、夕方に女性専用の時間を設けたりする施設が多くあります。そうしないと女性が来なくなるからです。

Usually not, even in a mixed bath, because swimsuits carry detergent into shared water. Some places permit a thin bathing wrap called a yuamigi, and some rent them. Check with the inn before you go.
混浴でもたいてい水着は不可です。洗剤を共有の湯に持ち込むからです。湯浴み着という薄い着衣を認める施設があり、貸してくれるところもあります。事前に宿に確かめてください。

No. It is genuinely rare and getting rarer. Most Japanese people have never been in one, and many would not want to. Do not describe it as a normal Japanese custom.
