Goldfish came to Japan from China and were bred here into dozens of varieties. They belong to summer: bowls on a veranda, glass wind chimes with goldfish painted on them, and the festival stall where children pay a few hundred yen for a paper-covered scoop and try to lift fish out of a shallow tank before the paper tears.

Goldfish in Japan are a summer thing, the way pumpkins are an autumn thing elsewhere. They arrived from China several centuries ago, were bred hard through the Edo period into fat-bodied, long-finned varieties, and were sold in the street by men carrying two buckets on a pole, calling as they walked.
Today you meet them mainly at a festival. A stall holds a shallow tank of fish and hands you a scoop made of a plastic ring with a sheet of thin paper stretched across it. The paper softens the instant it is wet, so the trick is to enter and leave the water at an angle, move steadily, and never lift straight up.
Most people get one or two. If you win a fish you are handed it in a water-filled bag, and this is worth thinking about before you play, because a goldfish can live for years and a hotel room is not a home for one.
QWhat do I do if I win one and I am traveling?
Tell the stall holder you would rather not take it. Most will keep the fish and give you a small prize or nothing at all, and nobody thinks badly of it. Releasing a goldfish into a river or pond is harmful and should not be done.
QAny trick to the scooping?
Wet the whole paper at once rather than half of it, move the scoop sideways under a fish instead of chasing it, and tip the fish into the bowl in one continuous motion. Fish resting near the bottom are easier than fish swimming.
QWhere are they bred?
Yamatokoriyama in Nara and Yatomi in Aichi are the two best known centers, both with ponds you can visit. Yamatokoriyama holds a national scooping championship every August.
