Japan is often described as a single chain of four main islands, but it includes well over six thousand islands in total, and most of the smaller ones have no bridge to the mainland at all. For anyone living there, the ferry is not a scenic extra but the basic supply line: groceries, mail, building materials, and in an emergency a doctor, all travel by boat, which is why schedules are built around weather and tide as much as passenger convenience, and why a storm can quietly cut off a small community for a day or more.
At the same time, ferry travel has become a genuine attraction, especially in the Seto Inland Sea, where hopping between art-filled islands like Naoshima has turned a once-practical trip into a slow, deliberate way to travel. Longer routes exist too, some overnight ferries running well over twenty hours between the main islands, complete with sleeping berths, which some travelers choose specifically to avoid flying. What ties both uses together, I think, is that the ferry never stopped being ordinary infrastructure, even where it has also become a destination.
日本はよく本州・北海道・九州・四国という四つの主な島の連なりとして語られますが、実際には全部で6千を超える島があり、その小さな島々の多くには本土への橋がまったくありません。そこに暮らす人にとって、フェリーは景色を楽しむための特別なものではなく、生活そのものを支える基盤です。食料も郵便も建築資材も、緊急のときの医者も、すべて船で運ばれます。

It happens regularly, especially around typhoons in late summer and rough winter seas on the Japan Sea side. Island residents plan around this as a normal part of life, and visitors are advised to build a buffer day into any itinerary involving a remote island.
