If you spend an evening walking around a Japanese hot-spring town, you'll likely see two things that have nothing to do with bathing: a shateki, a shooting gallery where you fire a cork rifle at small prizes on a shelf, and a coin-operated ping-pong table in a ryokan hallway or game room. Both became fixtures of onsen resorts in the mid-twentieth century, when whole families traveled together and needed something to fill the hours between dinner and bed in a town with no nightlife to speak of.
The prizes at a shateki are often cheap and slightly outdated, and the ping-pong tables are usually a little worn, but that is part of the charm. I think what keeps them going now is nostalgia as much as entertainment: for many Japanese visitors, hitting a rubber ball across a hallway table is tied directly to childhood memories of a family trip.
