In Japan, almost every school, from elementary school through university, has its own school song, composed specifically for that institution. New students learn it within their first weeks, and it is sung at entrance ceremonies, graduation, sports day, and assemblies throughout the year.
The lyrics are usually written in old-fashioned, literary Japanese, full of references to a nearby mountain or river and the spirit the school hopes to pass on, set to a simple, formal melody. What surprises many outsiders is how deeply it sticks.
Decades after graduating, adults can still sing their school song from memory, word for word, even though many of them could not explain exactly what the older phrases mean. Hearing it again, even years later, brings back a very specific place and time.
日本では、小学校から大学まで、ほとんどすべての学校にその学校のためだけに作られた校歌があります。新入生は最初の数週間で覚え、入学式、卒業式、運動会、そして一年を通じた集会で歌います。

生徒は本当に歌詞の意味を分かっているのですか。
Often only partly. The words are in an old literary style few students study directly, so a teacher may explain the meaning once, and after that it survives as something sung rather than read. Many adults only think about the words again at a reunion.
半分ほどしか分かっていないことも多いです。歌詞は生徒がふだん習わない文語で書かれているため、教師が一度だけ意味を説明することもあり、その後は「読むもの」ではなく「歌うもの」として残ります。同窓会で久しぶりに歌詞を見て、初めて意味を考える大人も多くいます。

Usually a poet and a composer are commissioned when the school opens. Once written, it is almost never changed, even if a landmark it mentions disappears or the school later merges with another.
たいていは開校のときに詩人と作曲家に依頼して作られます。一度できると、歌詞に出てくる名所が無くなっても、他校と統合しても、ほとんど変えられません。
QIs it the same as the national anthem?
国歌と同じようなものですか。
No. The national anthem, kimigayo, is sung separately at the same ceremonies and can be politically sensitive. The school song has no official status; it exists purely to give each school its own identity.
違います。国歌（君が代）は同じ式典で別に歌われ、政治的に敏感に扱われることもあります。校歌に公的な位置づけはなく、その学校だけの一体感をつくるために存在します。

校歌の多くは明治から昭和にかけて、開校のときに依頼されて作られました。近くの山や川、創立者の理念を歌い込む形式が定着し、今も新設校の多くがこの型を踏襲しています。文語で書かれることが多いのは荘重さを出すためとされますが、それが意味の伝わりにくさの一因にもなっています。統合や廃校で校歌そのものが失われることもあり、卒業生の会が歌詞や楽譜を記録に残す活動をしている例もあります。運動部を応援するための応援歌とは別物です。
