Sashiko is a traditional Japanese form of stitching. The name comes from the verb sasu, to pierce, because you push the needle in and out of the cloth again and again to make small, even stitches. In the past, cloth was valuable, especially in the cold regions of northern Japan.

Farmers and fishing families sewed layers of cloth together with sashiko to make their clothes stronger and warmer, and to patch holes. Over time, the stitches became beautiful geometric patterns, and some areas, such as Tsugaru in Aomori, developed their own famous styles.

Firefighters in the Edo period also wore thick sashiko jackets soaked in water. Today, sashiko is popular around the world as a craft and as a way to repair jeans and other clothes. I think it shows how people once turned a necessity into something beautiful.

Q

Is sashiko the same as boro?

They are related but not the same. Sashiko is the stitching technique. Boro usually means old cloth that has been patched and mended many times, often using sashiko stitches.

Q

Why are the patterns so geometric?

The stitches follow the grain of the cloth, counting threads or following straight lines. That naturally creates repeating shapes like diamonds, waves and crosses.

Q

Is sashiko hard to learn?

The basic stitch is simple, so beginners can start with a kit and a small cloth. What takes practice is keeping every stitch the same length so the pattern looks even.
