Japanese work clothes split into two very different stories. The older one is about function: tradespeople developed specific garments for specific jobs, like nikkabokka, the loose, balloon-shaped trousers common on construction sites, or jika-tabi, rubber-soled boots with a split toe that let workers grip scaffolding, roof tiles, or narrow beams the way ordinary shoes never could.
These aren't costume pieces; they're still standard gear on many job sites today. The newer story is about fashion. A workwear retail chain called Workman, originally built to sell cheap, tough clothing to manual laborers, discovered over the past decade that its jackets, pants, and rain gear were popular with hikers, commuters, and fashion-conscious young people who wanted functional clothes at a fraction of outdoor-brand prices.
The result is an odd but very Japanese overlap: the same waterproof jacket might be worn by a roofer on a job site and a college student on a rainy commute, for exactly the same practical reasons.
