Monpe are baggy work trousers that farming women in Japan wore in the fields, often over or instead of a kimono. They are thought to come from the snowy northeast, where they kept the legs warm and let women move freely. During World War II they spread to cities across Japan as practical clothes for emergencies. Today they are back as comfortable everyday pants.

If you visit the Japanese countryside, you might see an older woman working in a vegetable field in loose, patterned trousers. Those are monpe. They are wide at the hips, tied with a cord at the waist, and narrow at the ankles, so they are easy to bend and squat in, and dirt does not get inside.

They are thought to have started as work clothes in the snowy northeast, where they also kept women's legs warm. Around the middle of the twentieth century, monpe suddenly became common everywhere, because during the Second World War women in cities were encouraged to wear them so they could move quickly in an air raid.

For a long time after that, many people saw them as old-fashioned. Recently, though, young designers have started making monpe from traditional woven cotton, and people wear them as relaxed everyday pants. Personally, I think they are one of the most practical pieces of clothing Japan has ever made.

Q

Are monpe the same as hakama?

No. Hakama are formal and wide all the way down, often pleated. Monpe are plain work clothes, closer to loose pants that are gathered at the ankle.

Q

Why do people connect monpe with the war?

Because during World War II women all over Japan, including in cities, were encouraged to wear them for air raid drills and emergencies. Before that, they were mostly farm clothes in some regions.

FACTThey existed long before as farm work clothes in some regions. The war only made them common across the whole country.
