Mino is a raincoat made of straw or other plant fibers, layered so that rain runs down the outside. It was worn over the shoulders and back, usually with a kasa, a wide woven hat. Farmers, fishermen and travelers relied on it for centuries, until rubber and vinyl raincoats took its place in the twentieth century. Today you mostly see it in folk tales, festivals and museums.

Before plastic raincoats, people in Japan kept dry with a mino. It's a cape made of rice straw or other plant fibers, such as sedge or tree bark, depending on the region. The fibers hang down in layers, a bit like the thatch on a roof, so the rain runs off the outside instead of soaking through.
People wore it over their shoulders and back, usually together with a kasa, a wide woven hat. They used it for farm work in the rain or snow, and on long journeys on foot. As rubber and vinyl raincoats spread in the twentieth century, the mino disappeared from daily life.
But the word is still around. In old stories, a kakuremino is a magic straw cape that makes you invisible, and today the word means a front used to hide someone's real purpose. I find it interesting that such a simple piece of farm clothing lives on mostly through a figure of speech.
Did it actually keep people dry?
It worked better than you might think. Because the straw hangs downward in layers, most of the water runs off the surface. It also helped keep out the cold in snow.
What does kakuremino mean?
