Okinawa is warm all year, has typhoons, and builds in concrete against them. Hokkaido has deep snow, heated houses with double glazing, and is usually said to have no rainy season. Cherry blossoms open in Okinawa in January and in Hokkaido in May.

People talk about the Japanese climate as if it were one thing, which it is not. The country runs about three thousand kilometers from north to south, and its two ends are barely comparable. Okinawa, in the far south, is subtropical: warm through the winter, humid, with typhoons arriving from summer into autumn.
Traditional houses there had low roofs weighted with tile against the wind, and modern ones are usually reinforced concrete for the same reason. Hokkaido, in the north, gets serious snow, and its houses are built for it, with double or triple glazing, central heating and steep or heated roofs, which is quite unlike the cold, single-glazed houses of central Japan.
Hokkaido is also usually described as having no rainy season, because the seasonal front weakens before it reaches that far north, which makes June a good month to visit. The clearest way to picture the range is the cherry blossom front: the flowers open in Okinawa in January and in parts of Hokkaido in May, and the daily forecast maps that journey north.
人は日本の気候を一つのものとして語りますが、そうではありません。この国は南北におよそ三千キロあり、その両端は比べようもありません。南の果ての沖縄は亜熱帯です。冬も暖かく、湿度が高く、夏から秋にかけて台風が来ます。

That is the standard description, and the meteorological agency does not announce a rainy season start or end for Hokkaido. It still rains in June, and some years bring a spell that feels like one, sometimes called a phantom rainy season, but the sustained front that sits over the rest of the country does not reach it.
それが標準的な説明で、気象庁は北海道について梅雨入りや梅雨明けを発表しません。六月に雨は降りますし、梅雨のような長雨になる年もあって「蝦夷梅雨」と呼ばれますが、他の地域に居座る前線はそこまで届きません。

Essentially no. Snow on the main island is not part of normal weather, and the rare recorded instances of sleet in the outer islands were treated as major news. Winter there means jackets rather than coats, and the sea is too cold to swim but the air is mild.

It starts in Okinawa in January, with a different species, reaches Tokyo around late March, and arrives in Hokkaido in late April or May. The national broadcast follows it every spring. If you want blossoms and missed them in Kyoto, go north rather than giving up.
沖縄では一月に、別の種類の桜から始まり、東京にはおよそ三月下旬に届き、北海道には四月末から五月に着きます。全国の放送が毎春その歩みを追います。京都で見そびれたなら、諦めずに北へ向かってください。
