Umbrellas come with their own small etiquette in Japan, which makes sense in a country with a long rainy season and a lot of walking. At the entrance to a shop, museum or restaurant on a wet day you will find either a stand to leave your umbrella in or a dispenser of long plastic sleeves to slide it into, and you are expected to use one before going in, because dripping water across a floor is both rude and dangerous.
When you carry a closed umbrella, hold it pointing down at your side, not tucked horizontally under your arm, where the tip is at eye height for the person behind you on the stairs. On a crowded street, tilt yours away rather than into oncoming people.
Then there is the clear plastic umbrella, sold in every convenience store, which is why an umbrella stand outside a shop contains twenty identical ones and why they migrate between owners so easily. Many people accept this as a fact of life, and the polite version is to take an umbrella that is definitely yours.
傘には、日本ならではの小さな作法があります。梅雨が長く、歩くことの多い国であれば、そうなるのも道理です。雨の日、店や美術館や飲食店の入口には、傘立てか、細長いビニール袋を出す道具が置かれています。中へ入る前に使うことが期待されています。
床に水を落として歩くのは、失礼であり危なくもあるからです。閉じた傘を持つときは、下に向けて体の横に持ちます。脇に水平に抱えると、階段で後ろにいる人の目の高さに先が来ます。混んだ通りでは、向かってくる人のほうへ傾けず、逆へ傾けます。
そして、どのコンビニでも売っている透明のビニール傘。だから店先の傘立てには同じ傘が二十本並び、持ち主のあいだを簡単に移っていきます。多くの人はこれを仕方のないこととして受け入れています。丁寧なやり方は、間違いなく自分のものだと分かる傘を取ることです。

You slide your wet umbrella into it so it does not drip inside. Put the used sleeve in the bin provided when you leave. Some places have switched to a machine that wraps the umbrella for you.
濡れた傘を差し込んで、中で水が垂れないようにするためのものです。使った袋は、出るときに用意された箱へ入れます。傘を包む機械を置いている場所もあります。
QIs it safe to leave my umbrella in the stand outside?

A cheap plastic one, generally yes, though it may not be there when you return. A good umbrella is worth taking in with you in a sleeve, and some stands have small locks.
安いビニール傘なら、たいていは平気です。ただし戻ったときに無いこともあります。よい傘は袋に入れて持って入る値打ちがあります。鍵の付いた傘立てもあります。

They are sold in every convenience store for a few hundred yen, so anyone caught in the rain buys one. The result is that they are effectively disposable, and enormous numbers are thrown away each year.
