Iro-uchikake is a long, heavy kimono robe that a bride wears open over another kimono, without tying it with an obi. It usually has a red, gold or black base with patterns such as cranes, pine trees and phoenixes. Many brides wear the all-white shiromuku for the ceremony and change into iro-uchikake for the reception, though some wear it from the start.

If you see a Japanese wedding photo with a bride in a bright red or gold robe, she is probably wearing an iro-uchikake. "Iro" means color, and an uchikake is a long outer robe. It is worn open over a kimono called a kakeshita, which is tied with an obi, and the hem is padded so it trails on the floor.
The fabric is usually heavy brocade or embroidered silk, with lucky patterns like cranes, pine trees, plum blossoms and phoenixes. Uchikake are said to come from the formal wear of women in high-ranking samurai families.
Today, many brides wear the pure white shiromuku for the Shinto ceremony and then change into iro-uchikake for the reception. This change of outfit is called oiro-naoshi. Most couples rent it, since it can be extremely expensive to buy. I think it is a nice way to show that the bride is stepping into a new, colorful stage of her life.
Why doesn't she have an obi around the outside?
The uchikake is meant to be worn open, like a long coat. There is an obi, but it is tied around the kimono underneath, so you only catch a glimpse of it.
Can a bride wear iro-uchikake for the ceremony itself?
Yes. Shiromuku is the most traditional choice for a Shinto ceremony, but iro-uchikake is also accepted as formal bridal wear. It depends on the couple and the venue.
Isn't it heavy?
It is. With the padded hem and thick fabric, the whole outfit is quite heavy, so brides usually have staff helping them walk and sit.
