Hakata-ori is a silk fabric woven in the Hakata area of Fukuoka. Weavers use a large number of warp threads and beat the weft threads in hard, so the cloth is thick and stiff. That makes it ideal for obi, the sash worn with a kimono, because once you tie it, it hardly loosens. Its most famous design, kenjo, uses simple stripes and shapes taken from Buddhist ritual tools.

Hakata-ori is a traditional silk fabric from Hakata, the old merchant town that is now part of Fukuoka City. It is most famous as material for the obi, the wide sash worn with a kimono. The cloth is made with a very large number of warp threads, and the weft is beaten in firmly, so it comes out thick, stiff and strong.

Because of this, a Hakata obi stays tight once it's tied, which is why men's obi and everyday obi are often made from it. According to local tradition, a Hakata merchant brought weaving techniques back from China in the thirteenth century.

In the Edo period, the local lord sent Hakata cloth to the shogun every year, and the classic pattern became known as kenjo, meaning "presented." The design uses shapes based on Buddhist ritual tools and neat stripes. In 1976 it was designated a national traditional craft. I like it because the pattern is simple, but you recognize it right away.

Q

Why is Hakata-ori used so much for obi?

Because it's thick and firm, a knot made with it doesn't slip. That makes it easy to wear all day, especially for men's obi.

Q

What does the kenjo pattern mean?

Kenjo means "presented to a superior." The name comes from the Edo period, when the lord of the area sent this cloth to the shogun as a gift every year.
