En is hard to translate because English splits the idea into fate, chance and connection, and Japanese keeps them together. When people say they have en with someone, they mean the meeting was not purely random and the relationship is worth keeping. The word comes from Buddhism, where it means the conditions that let something happen.
縁は訳しにくい言葉です。英語は運命・偶然・つながりに分けて言いますが、日本語はそれを一つにしたまま使います。あの人とは縁がある、と言うとき、その出会いはまったくの偶然ではなく、その関係は大切にする値打ちがある、という意味になります。もとは仏教の言葉で、物事が起こるための条件を指します。

En is one of those Japanese words that dissolves when you translate it. Dictionaries offer fate, destiny, chance and connection, and none of them is right on its own. The word comes from Buddhist thought, where nothing arises by itself: a result appears when the direct cause meets the surrounding conditions, and those conditions are en.
In ordinary speech it has become the word for the tie between people. If two people keep running into each other, someone will say there must be en between them. If a relationship ends badly, people say the en was cut. Shrines sell charms for enmusubi, the tying of connections, and they are bought for romance but also for work and friendship.
What matters is the attitude it carries. Rather than asking why you met someone, you treat the meeting itself as something given, and the polite thing is to look after it. I find it a generous way to think about other people.
QIs en the same as fate?
縁は運命と同じですか。
Not quite. Fate suggests everything was decided in advance, while en only says the conditions came together. Two people can have en and still let the relationship lapse, which would make no sense if it were fate.
少し違います。運命はすべてが前もって決まっていたという含みですが、縁は条件がそろったと言っているだけです。縁があっても関係が続かないことはあります。運命ならそれは筋が通りません。
QWhy do shrines sell charms for it?
どうして神社でそのお守りを売っているのですか。
Because connection is something people want and cannot arrange by effort alone. Enmusubi charms are best known for romance, but people also buy them before a job hunt or when moving to a new town.
つながりは、欲しくても努力だけでは手に入らないものだからです。縁結びのお守りは恋愛で知られていますが、就職活動の前や、新しい町へ移るときに買う人もいます。
QHow would I use it in conversation?
会話ではどう使えばいいですか。
The most useful form is a set phrase at a first meeting or a farewell: saying you are glad for the connection, or hoping the connection continues. It sounds warm without being personal, which is exactly why it is used.
初対面や別れぎわの決まった言い方として使うのがいちばん役に立ちます。ご縁がありまして、あるいは、ご縁が続きますように、といった形です。立ち入らずに温かく響くので、よく使われます。
誤解されやすい
MYTHTalking about en means Japanese people believe everything is predetermined.
縁を口にするのは、すべてが決まっていると信じているからだと思われがちです。
FACTIt is closer to an attitude than a belief. Even people who are not religious at all use the word, and it usually means the speaker intends to value the relationship.
信仰というより構えに近いものです。まったく宗教に関わりのない人も使いますし、たいていは、その関係を大切にするつもりだという意味になります。
そのまま使えるフレーズ
- I am glad our paths crossed.ご縁がありまして、うれしく思います。
- I hope we stay connected.ご縁が続きますように。
- We seem to keep running into each other.なんだか縁がありますね。
- This charm is for finding a good connection.これは縁結びのお守りです。
- The two of them lost touch completely.あの二人は、縁が切れてしまいました。
説明に使う語句
- a connectionつながり・縁
- to come together巡り合う
- a matchmaking charm縁結びのお守り
- to value a relationship関係を大切にする
