In many Japanese homes, the TV is on at 8 o'clock on weekday mornings for one reason: the asadora. Asadora means "morning drama," and it's a series that NHK, the public broadcaster, has been making since 1961. Each episode is just 15 minutes long, so people can watch it over breakfast and still leave on time.
One story usually runs for about six months, which means more than a hundred episodes about the same characters. Many asadora follow a woman's life from childhood to old age, and recent ones are often based on real people. The most famous is Oshin, from 1983, about a girl who grows up in poverty.
In the Kanto region, it averaged a rating of 52.6 percent, and it was later shown in many countries. Since 2020, the drama has aired five days a week instead of six, partly to reduce long working hours on set. I think the asadora is unusual because millions of people follow the same story, one small piece each morning.
日本の多くの家庭では、平日の朝8時にテレビがついています。理由は朝ドラです。朝ドラは「朝のドラマ」のことで、公共放送のNHKが1961年から作り続けているシリーズです。1回はわずか15分なので、朝ごはんを食べながら見ても、遅れずに出かけられます。
一つの物語はふつう半年ほど続くので、同じ登場人物の話が100回以上放送されます。多くの朝ドラは、一人の女性の子ども時代から晩年までを描き、最近は実在の人物をモデルにした作品もよくあります。いちばん有名なのは1983年の「おしん」で、貧しい家に生まれた少女の物語です。
関東地区での平均視聴率は52.6パーセントで、のちに多くの国でも放送されました。2020年からは、撮影現場の長時間労働を減らすことなどを理由に、週6回から週5回の放送になりました。何百万もの人が同じ物語を毎朝少しずつ追いかける、というところが、朝ドラの珍しいところだと私は思います。

Is it like a soap opera?
ソープオペラ（昼の連続メロドラマ）のようなものですか。
In a way, since it's a daily serial. But the stories usually follow one person's whole life, and many are based on real people, so it often feels more like a long biography.
毎日続く連続ドラマという意味では、似ています。ただ、物語はふつう一人の人生をまるごと追い、実在の人物をモデルにしたものも多いので、長い伝記に近いと感じることもよくあります。

NHKの連続テレビ小説の第1作は1961年の「娘と私」で、獅子文六の小説が原作だった。1983年度の「おしん」は、関東地区の平均視聴率52.6％を記録し、のちに海外の多くの国や地域でも放送された。長く8時15分に始まっていたが、2010年の「ゲゲゲの女房」から8時開始になった。2020年の「エール」からは、4Kでの制作に時間がかかることや働き方の見直しを理由に、土曜日の放送をやめ、月曜から金曜の週5回になっている。
