HOW TO

How to use an onsen or public bath

Step by step

Check the curtain at the entrance. One side is for men, the other is for women.

In the changing room, take off all your clothes and put them in a basket or locker.

Take only a small towel with you into the bath area.

Before getting in the tub, pour some hot water over your body to rinse off.

Sit down at a shower station and wash your body and hair well.

If you have long hair, tie it up so it doesn't touch the water.

Don't put your towel in the water. Put it on your head or leave it outside the tub.

Relax in the tub. Don't swim or splash around.

Before going back to the changing room, dry yourself off with your towel.

After your bath, drink some water and rest for a while.

Background

英語では「The tub is for soaking, not for washing. Everyone shares the same water.」

外国人の友だちには「If you feel dizzy, get out and cool down.」

Did you know?

Under Japanese law, water counts as an onsen if it's at least 25 degrees Celsius at the source or has certain minerals. So some onsen water is actually cold and has to be heated.

In 2017, Japan added a new onsen symbol showing three people in a bath, for foreign visitors. The classic steam symbol stayed too, and places can use either.

The big Mount Fuji paintings on public bath walls are said to have started in Tokyo in the early 1900s. They're more common in the Tokyo area than in western Japan.

The number of public baths peaked in 1968 and has been falling ever since, as most homes now have their own bathtubs. But large modern bath complexes are popular.

Q&A in English

Do I really have to be naked?

Yes, at most onsen and public baths, everyone bathes naked, and the baths are split by gender. You can hold your small towel in front of you while you walk.

What's the small towel for?

You use it to wash yourself, to cover yourself while walking, and to dry off before you go back to the changing room. Just keep it out of the bath water.

Is it OK to go in if I'm not used to hot water?

Sure. Get in slowly, stay only a few minutes at first, and come out if you feel dizzy. Some places have a cooler tub too.
