Utaseyu is a kind of bath where hot water pours down from a pipe high above. You sit or stand under it and let the water hit your shoulders or back, like a massage. You'll find it at many onsen, public baths, and super sento. It's popular with people who have stiff shoulders, but don't put your head under it, because the water falls hard.

If you visit a large onsen or a super sento in Japan, you might see water pouring down from a pipe near the ceiling, with someone sitting underneath it. This is called utaseyu. The name means something like "hot water you let hit you." It may look like a waterfall for religious training, but it's actually for relaxing.
People let the falling water hit their shoulders, upper back, or lower back, and it feels like a strong massage. Many Japanese people suffer from stiff shoulders, called katakori, so this bath is especially popular with office workers and older people. There are a few things to keep in mind.
Don't let the water hit your head or neck, because it falls with real force. Don't stay under it too long, and if there's a line, take turns. Some facilities ask you not to use it right after eating or drinking alcohol. The first time I tried it, the pressure surprised me, but my shoulders felt much lighter afterward.
Is it like the waterfall training monks do?
It looks similar, but it isn't religious at all. Waterfall training is usually done in cold water in the mountains, while utaseyu is warm water in a bathhouse, used to loosen stiff muscles.
Where should I let the water hit?
Your shoulders, upper back, or lower back. Keep it away from your head and neck, and move around a little so the water doesn't hit one spot for too long.
