A tanzen is a heavy, cotton-padded robe shaped like a kimono, with wide sleeves. At a ryokan in the colder months, you'll often find one folded next to the yukata, and you put it on over the yukata, not instead of it. Some families also wear one at home on cold nights. In some regions it's called dotera.

A tanzen is a thick, padded robe that looks like a big, heavy kimono. Most visitors meet it for the first time at a ryokan in fall or winter. Next to the thin cotton yukata in the room, there's often a second, much heavier garment, and many people aren't sure what to do with it.
The answer is simple: you put on the yukata first and wear the tanzen on top, like a coat. You can wear it around the inn and to dinner, and in many hot spring towns, even out for a short walk. At home, some Japanese families still wear one on cold nights, though modern heating has made that less common.
The name is said to come from Tanzen-buro, a bathhouse in Edo whose stylish customers wore padded robes like this. In some areas, people call it dotera instead. I think it's one of the most comfortable things you can wear in a chilly Japanese house.
Do I wear it instead of the yukata?
No, you wear it over the yukata, like a coat. Close the front the same way, with the left side over the right, and tie it with the belt that comes with it.
Can I wear it outside the inn?
In many hot spring towns, people walk around in a yukata and tanzen, especially in the evening. Rules differ by inn, though, so ask at the front desk if you're not sure.
Is a tanzen the same as a dotera?
