Once a year, or once every few years, a company takes its employees away together, typically by bus to a hot spring resort. The evening is a banquet in a tatami hall with speeches, drinking, karaoke and party games, and the next day is sightseeing. The company pays most of the cost as a welfare benefit. The custom peaked in the late twentieth century and has faded, but smaller firms and some traditional companies still hold it.

For decades, the company trip was a fixture of Japanese working life. The whole staff, or a whole department, would board a chartered bus on a Saturday morning and ride to a hot spring town, check into a large inn, bathe, put on the inn's cotton robes and gather in a tatami banquet hall.
The president would give a speech, the toast would go around, junior staff would pour drinks for their seniors, and after the meal came karaoke, bingo and skits by the new recruits. Rooms were shared, and the next day there was some sightseeing before the bus home. Companies paid most of the cost, treating it as a way to build loyalty and let people relax across ranks.
From the 1990s the custom declined, as budgets tightened and younger workers made clear that spending a weekend with the boss was not their idea of a benefit. Where it survives, it is often optional, shorter, or replaced by a day trip. I have mixed feelings: the banquets could be tedious, but a shared bath does dissolve hierarchy for an evening.
QIs attendance mandatory?
Officially it is usually voluntary, and refusing is more accepted than in the past. But in small traditional firms absence is noticed, and if the company pays for everything, skipping can look ungrateful. If you go, you can leave the drinking early and nobody will hold it against you.
QDo I really have to share a room and a bath with coworkers?
Traditionally yes; that was the point. Today many companies book single or double rooms on request, and bathing in the large communal bath is optional, since inns have private baths or showers. Ask the organizer in advance rather than discovering it on arrival.
QWhy did companies pay for this?
It counted as employee welfare, was tax-deductible within limits, and was believed to strengthen the team. In the era of lifetime employment, the company saw itself almost as a family, and the trip was the family outing. As that model weakened, so did the trip.
