Seken is often translated as society or the public, but it is smaller and more personal than either. It is the set of people whose eyes you feel: neighbors, relatives, colleagues, the parents at your child's school. Their opinion is never voted on and rarely stated, yet it decides a great many private choices.

Seken is a word English has to unpack. It is usually rendered as society, but society sounds like everyone in the country, and seken is much closer than that. It is the ring of people who might hear about what you do: neighbors, relatives, the office, the other parents.

Japanese has a set of phrases built on it. Seken ga urusai means people will talk. Seken-tei means how it looks to that circle. Seken-banare means someone has drifted out of it. What makes seken powerful is that it has no address and no voice, so there is nobody to argue with.

Sociologists here have written a great deal about it, and one common argument is that seken, not the law and not religion, is the strongest everyday check on behavior in Japan.

QHow is seken different from society?

Society is everyone, including strangers you will never meet. Seken is only the people whose talk could reach you. That is why it feels personal and why it can be escaped by moving away, which the word seken-banare hints at.

QDoes seken still matter for young people?

Less than for their grandparents in villages, but it has partly moved online. Worrying about how a post will be read by a loose circle of acquaintances is a recognizably similar feeling.

QWhat is seken-tei?

It is appearances before that circle: keeping a respectable front. A family may hide a job loss or a divorce not from shame at the fact but from what the circle will make of it.

  • People will talk.
  • It's about appearances.
  • What will the neighbors think?
  • He doesn't care what people say.
  • That circle is smaller than you think.

  • the public around you世間
  • appearances世間体
  • gossip噂
  • out of touch with the world世間離れ
