Karuton is the small tray you'll see next to the register in many Japanese shops. Instead of handing your money to the cashier, you put it on the tray, and the cashier counts it there. This way, both of you can see exactly how much was paid. Your change may come back on the tray, or be handed to you with the receipt.

If you pay cash in Japan, you'll probably notice a small tray next to the register. It's called a karuton, though many people just call it the change tray. You're expected to put your bills and coins on it instead of handing them to the cashier. The cashier then counts the money on the tray, where you can both see it.

There are a few good reasons for this. First, it prevents arguments, such as "I gave you a ten-thousand-yen bill" or "No, it was five thousand." Second, coins don't roll off the counter. And some people simply prefer not to touch hands with a stranger.

Visitors sometimes hold out their money and get confused when the cashier doesn't take it, but don't worry: handing it over isn't rude, and most cashiers will accept it. These days, the tray is used less and less, because self-checkouts, automatic change machines and card payments are spreading. Still, I think it's a small, practical idea that shows how much people here care about avoiding mistakes.

Q

Is it rude to hand money directly to the cashier?

No, it isn't rude, and most cashiers will just take it. The tray is simply the usual way, so they may point to it first. Putting money on the tray makes things go a little more smoothly.

Q

Why does the cashier count the money out loud?

It's another way of making sure there's no misunderstanding. Many cashiers say how much you gave them and how much change you'll get, like "I've received 1,000 yen." It helps both sides check the amount on the spot.

Q

Do banks use these trays too?

Yes. At many bank counters, documents, cash and bankbooks are passed back and forth on a tray. For most Japanese people, it's a very familiar object.
