HOW TO

How to visit a Buddhist temple

Step by step

Give a small bow at the main gate before you go in.

If there's a water basin, rinse your hands and mouth.

If you want to offer incense or a candle, buy one at the stand and light it.

Some people wave the smoke from the big incense burner toward their body.

At the main hall, gently put a coin in the offering box.

Put your hands together quietly in front of your chest and pray. Don't clap.

Give a small bow and step back.

Background

英語では「Different Buddhist schools have slightly different customs, so just follow what others are doing.」

Did you know?

Temples ring the bell 108 times on New Year's Eve, often said to match the 108 worldly desires. There are other explanations, and some temples ring it a different number of times.

A temple gate is called a sanmon, or mountain gate, even in the city. That's because many temples have a mountain name, a custom from when temples were built in the mountains.

Incense is said to purify the space, and some Buddhist teachings also see its scent as food for the Buddha. Explanations differ between schools.

Q&A in English

Why don't you clap at temples?

Clapping is a Shinto custom for honoring the kami, or Shinto gods. At Buddhist temples, people usually just put their palms together and pray quietly.

Why do people wave the incense smoke on themselves?

There's a popular belief that the smoke can heal or protect the part of your body it touches. It's a folk custom, and you don't have to do it.

Can I visit a temple if I'm not Buddhist?

Yes. Temples welcome visitors of any faith. Just be quiet and respectful, especially inside the halls.
