Yumeguri tegata is a bathing pass sold in some onsen towns. With one pass, you can visit the baths of several inns or public bathhouses, not just the place where you are staying. A well-known example is Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto, where a round wooden pass lets you choose three outdoor baths. The rules differ from town to town, so check them when you buy one.

In some Japanese hot spring towns, you don't have to stay in one bath. You can buy a pass called a yumeguri tegata. "Yumeguri" means going around the baths, and a tegata was originally a kind of travel permit. With this pass, you can walk from inn to inn and try their baths, even if you are not staying there.
The idea became famous at Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto. In 1986, the inns there started selling a shared wooden pass made of local cedar. With it, visitors could choose three outdoor baths from the inns in the town. It encouraged people to stroll the streets in yukata, and the whole town came to feel like one big inn.
Other onsen towns have similar passes, sometimes as paper tickets or wristbands, and the rules vary. Some baths have set hours, and some are closed on certain days. I like this system because it turns a quiet soak into a small adventure, and you get to see a different view in every bath.
Can I use it if I'm not staying in the town?
Usually, yes. Many passes are sold to day visitors too. But each town has its own rules, so check where it's sold and which baths are included.
Do I need to bring my own towel?
It's a good idea. Some baths don't provide towels for visitors, so most people carry a small towel with them as they go from bath to bath.
