Japanese companies move employees between branches, and the employee is expected to go. When the family cannot move, because of the children's schooling, a spouse's job or an elderly parent, the employee goes alone and lives in company housing, often for years, returning at weekends or monthly.

Tanshin funin means being posted to another city and going alone. Japanese companies, particularly large ones, move staff between branches every few years, partly to develop generalists and partly to prevent anyone becoming entrenched, and historically the employee was expected to accept without much negotiation.
If the family cannot move, and often they cannot because a child is mid-way through school, or the spouse has a job, or a parent needs care, then the employee goes by himself. The word is not gendered but the overwhelming majority are men. He lives in a small company flat, comes home at weekends or once a month depending on the distance, and this can go on for years.
The costs are not hidden in Japan: it is discussed as a cause of distance between fathers and children and of strain on marriages. Companies have begun to reduce it, offering allowances to move families, limiting transfers, or hiring staff on regional terms who cannot be posted elsewhere.
QCan an employee refuse a transfer?
Legally it depends on the contract and on whether the order is reasonable, and courts have ruled both ways. In practice refusing has long been understood to damage a career, though attitudes are shifting and regional hiring tracks now exist.
QHow often do they come home?
It depends on distance and company support. Weekly if the posting is a couple of hours away, monthly if it is at the other end of the country, and companies usually pay for a set number of trips home per month.
