In Japanese martial arts, practice usually starts and ends with everyone kneeling in a line and bowing to the front of the hall, called the shomen. Then they bow to the teacher, and often to each other. The front wall may have a small Shinto shelf, a scroll, or the name of the dojo, and some halls have nothing at all. The bow is a way to show respect for the place where you train.

If you join a judo, kendo, or karate class in Japan, one of the first things you'll do is bow to a wall. At the start of practice, everyone kneels in a line, and the leader calls out "Shomen ni rei," which means "Bow to the front." The front of a dojo, or training hall, is usually the side opposite the entrance, and it's treated as the most important side of the room.

Depending on the dojo, it may have a small Shinto shelf, a scroll with words written in brush, a photo of the founder, or just the name of the club. After that bow, students bow to the teacher with "Sensei ni rei," and then to each other.

The order and the words change from dojo to dojo, so it's best to watch and copy. Many beginners from abroad ask whether this is a religious act. For most people, it's simply respect for the place and for the time spent training there. I like this custom, because it tells you clearly when practice begins and ends.

Q

Is bowing to the shrine on the wall a religious act?

Some people see it that way, but most Japanese students think of it as respect for the training hall, not worship. If you're uncomfortable, it's fine to talk to the teacher. Many dojo are used to visitors from other faiths.

Q

Which side is the front if there's nothing on the wall?

It's usually the wall farthest from the entrance, where the teacher sits facing the students. If you're not sure, just follow what the others do.

Q

Do I bow when I enter and leave the dojo too?

Yes, in most dojo you make a short standing bow at the entrance toward the front, both coming in and going out. It's a small habit, but teachers notice it.

MYTHBowing to the front means you're praying to a god.

FACTFor most people in the dojo, it's a sign of respect for the place, the same way you might take off your hat in a special room. Many halls don't have anything religious on the wall at all.
